Operation extension in gas turbine-based advanced cycles with a surge prevention tool

Abstract This work aims to present the development and testing of an innovative tool for surge prevention in advanced gas turbine cycles. The presence additional components, such as a saturator humid cycles, heat exchanger external combustor, solar receiver or fuel cell stack hybrid system, implies larger size volumes between compressor outlet recuperator expander inlet. large volume increases risk incurring instability, especially during dynamic operations. For these reasons, at University Genoa, Thermochemical Power Group (TPG) has implemented four precursors new diagnostic real-time software which can recognise incipience condition comparing precursor values with set moving thresholds. most aspects this are: (i) operational range extension safer management systems energy generation, (ii) positive impact efficiency due high systems, (iii) using standard probes, (iv) small on control sensor costs, (v) flexibility adaptation different conditions machines. very important final aspect is obtained thresholds able change automatically adapt themselves plant machine regime. From cost point view, utilization measurements essential requirement equip commercial machines without significant capital costs. performance been demonstrated experimental data from test rig composed T100 microturbine connected modular vessel, permits generate effect components (especially view). Vibro-acoustic data, collected transients stable operative surge, were used tune all parameters obtain good predictivity.
